    Meta Uses AI Interactions to Personalize Ads and Content Recommendations

    Meta is rolling out a new update that will use people’s interactions with its generative AI tools to refine both ad targeting and content recommendations across its platforms. Users will be notified on October 7, 2025, with the full rollout taking effect on December 16, 2025. Despite the change, users will still have the ability to manage what they see through features like Ads Preferences and feed controls. With more than 1 billion people engaging with Meta AI every month, the company says the update is designed to make its AI-powered products more useful and personalized.

    How AI Interactions Shape Personalization

    Meta plans to take into account exchanges with its AI features, whether through text prompts or voice conversations, to deliver more tailored content, ads, and recommendations, such as suggested posts or reels. For instance, if someone chats with Meta AI about hiking, they may start seeing related communities, articles, or product promotions, much like how their browsing and activity already influence their feed.

    Smarter, More Relevant Recommendations

    Until now, personalization on Facebook and Instagram has primarily been based on user engagement with posts, pages, and groups. With this update, AI conversations will act as an additional signal, helping Meta reduce irrelevant content and surface material that better matches individual interests.

    Privacy and User Control

    Meta emphasizes that users remain in control of their personalization settings. Preferences for ads and feed content can be updated at any time. Voice chats with AI are clearly indicated with a microphone icon, and microphone access requires permission from the user. Importantly, sensitive subjects such as political beliefs, religion, health information, or ethnicity mentioned during AI conversations with Meta AI will not be used for ad targeting.

    Account Linking Across Meta Platforms

    Personalization through AI interactions will only extend across Meta’s apps if accounts are connected through the Accounts Center. For example, a conversation with Meta AI on WhatsApp will not impact the recommendations on Instagram or Facebook unless the WhatsApp account is linked within the user’s Meta ecosystem.

    Rollout Schedule

    • October 7, 2025: Users begin receiving notifications about the update.

    • December 16, 2025: AI-driven personalization based on interactions officially goes live.
